internetworks introduction

Posted by xareev | Saturday, August 14, 2010 | Category: |

The term internetworking refers to linking individual LANs together to form a single internetwork

aims & objectives -

provide an introduction to how enabling network technologies are combined to make possible the construction of the internet

realise how the concepts learnt in weeks 8 & 9 of the course may work in practice

Device for Networking:

· increasing the spanning distance of a LAN:

repeaters

· connecting LANs (segment by segment):

bridges, switches

· enabling the internet:

routers, gateways

there are two main reasons for implementing multiple LANs and internetworking them:

extend the geographic coverage of the network beyond what a single LAN can support -- to multiple floors in a building, to nearby buildings, and to remote sites

share traffic loads between more than one LAN
